The village of Alt Rehse (Old Deer)was developed in Nazi years to provide training for medical personnel. Research is also believed to have been undertaken into techniques for mass killing . Unusually, the complex was designed as a series of buidlings that resembled farmhouses and agricultural barns, rather than the mass concrete structures seen elsewhere.
In GDR days, a bunker was installed within the site that would have served as a formward Command and Communications Centre for the north of the country (Military District V). The bunker is roughly H shaped, with the communications centre at the crossbar. It was constructed using prefabricated U-shaped concrete arches. Access to the complex was from within the basement of a nearby house. There were also some personnel shelters in the area.
