This was to be an emergency control room in the event of an attack, all the phone lines from the normal above ground control room where duplicated into the bunker, along with the radio communications at the time, and as you see from the photos there were bunks and basic facilities. Our department was responsible for running up the Standby Generator once a month so we got in there frequently. I think the damp has got the better of the site now so expect it will decline with age, however it is on a secure site so will not get vandalised. (Ian Coates)
Yorkshire Water built 10 bunkers, 7 built to standard design like this one illustrated, with access via ladder. The 3 non standard were in the basement of Yorkshire Water offices in Skipton, an old Victorian building now sold and two converted basements of pumping stations in the west of the area. Can’t be sure from the photo but probably built to the same layout as South West Water (one visited during SB weekend) and Severn Trent bunkers. (Nick Catford)
